As part of our mission, EARAD is committed to empower fathers and mothers from east Africa, so that they can support the education of their children. This is to instill a culture of self-responsibility for the growth, development and the academic achievement of children. A culture that values education and independence. EARAD strives to empower parents so that they do not delegate their responsibilities to community organisation, rather, they actively participate and colloborate with other parents, and in the process, parents themselves become the driving force of the academic growth and development of their own children.
For instance, EARAD holds seminars for parents to to instill a culture of 'YES WE CAN' on UK school systems; the importance of parent evenings, and how to prepare for it; how they could participate in school activities, school governors and other educational opportunities that might be available to parents and pupils, how children and adolescnts should stay safe, excell in education, participate and lead their communities as well as the disadvantages of remaining on the sidelines.
Similarly, EARAD provides practical information on school applications, parent school relations, dealing with school related issues such as exclusions and the types of exclusions, when should schools exclude a student, parents' rights and responsibilities, as well as basic appeals procedures and complaints. Also, EARAD provides practical guide on bullying and how to tackle it, and where to go for help and advice regarding how to form parents' awareness groups.
What EARAD does for parents:
- Set up parents' awareness groups, where the parents of your local schools get together to actively involve in the education of your children, EARAD can provide you with advice and information from scratch to a fully functioning organisation. EARAD wants to establish the mentality of 'active participation of parents'
- Can connect you to a network of parents' awareness groups throughout London who have been through similar processes and circumstances.
- If you need information and assistance regarding bullying, school exclusion and other serious matters related to the education of your child, EARAD might be able to meet with you and provide you with whatever it can, or connect you to national organisations that might be able to deal with your situation more effectively.
Please note, EARAD is not a law firm, thus information provided should not be understood as legal advice. Some of the links below enable you to read information packages prepared by the Advisory Centre for Education (ACE).
